Selecting objects

To edit an object, you must select it. You can select objects by clicking them or by dragging selection marquees around them using the Pointer, Select Behind, or Subselection tools.

Note: Use the Marquee, Lasso, or Magic Wand tool to select an area of pixels in image edit mode. For more information, see Selecting pixels.

To select a path object:

1 Choose the Pointer tool.
2 Move the pointer over the stroke of the object, or move it over the fill if the object has a fill.
Note: When the Mouse Highlight tool option is on, the highlight indicates when the pointer is in place to select the object. For more information, see Highlighting selectable objects.
3 Click the object. A selection path outlining the object appears.

To select multiple objects:

Choose the Pointer tool and drag a box around the objects.

To add to a selection:

Hold down Shift while selecting additional objects. Other selected objects remain selected.

To deselect an object while leaving other objects selected:

Hold down Shift and click a selected object. Other selected objects remain selected.

When stacked, grouped, or overlapping paths obscure a path, you can still select the underlying path.

To select a path behind another path:

1 Choose the Select Behind tool.
2 Click a path repeatedly until you have selected the object you want.

To select everything on every layer in the document:

In Windows, press Control+A.
On the Macintosh, press Command+A.

Note: Select All does not select objects on locked or hidden layers. When Single Layer Editing is enabled, only objects on the current layer are selected. For information, see Creating and arranging layers.

To deselect everything on every layer:

Choose Edit > Deselect.
In Windows, press Control+D.
On the Macintosh, press Command+D.
